GARY JONES WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

About Gary Jones

Professional Wildlife Photographer & Guide

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website.

I’m Gary Jones, a professional wildlife photographer and guide based in North Wales, perfectly placed to explore the dramatic landscapes of the Welsh coastline and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).

My fascination with wildlife began at an early age. As a youngster I spent countless hours exploring the outdoors, and it wasn’t long before I started carrying a camera on my adventures, hoping to capture the incredible wildlife encounters I was fortunate enough to experience. What began as a simple hobby soon became a lifelong passion, eventually leading me to turn that passion into my profession.

Today, wildlife photography allows me to combine my love of nature, conservation and travel,

A Life Outdoors

Alongside photography, I am an experienced mountaineer and spend much of my time in the mountains. Whether I’m walking a local Welsh ridge or travelling overseas in search of wildlife, one thing never changes—the camera always comes with me.

Although North Wales will always be home, I regularly travel throughout the UK and internationally to photograph wildlife. Some of my favourite destinations include the rugged landscapes of the Cairngorms, Scotland’s spectacular Western Isles, and many of Europe’s finest wildlife locations.

My Passion for Birds of Prey

While I enjoy photographing every aspect of the natural world, birds have always held a special place in my heart—particularly birds of prey.

Ospreys are undoubtedly my favourite species, and every spring and summer I spend countless hours photographing these magnificent birds, observing their behaviour and appreciating the privilege of watching them in the wild.

Workshops, Tours & Presentations

When I’m not creating my own images, I deliver wildlife photography workshops and guided tours throughout the UK and overseas, helping photographers of all abilities improve their skills while enjoying unforgettable wildlife encounters.

I also present illustrated talks to camera clubs, wildlife groups and conservation organisations, sharing stories, techniques and experiences gathered from many years in the field.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to work alongside respected naturalists including Iolo Williams and Mike Dilger, as well as organisations such as Welsh Water, Cambrian Photography, Hawke Optics, Crib Goch Outdoor, Shimoda Designs and The Muck Boot Company.

Responsible Wildlife Photography

Most of my photography is created in the wild, capturing completely natural behaviour.

As a professional workshop leader, I also make use of a carefully selected number of commercial wildlife hides. I only work with hide owners who place the welfare of wildlife above everything else and who demonstrate the highest standards of ethical practice.

Many of these hides actively contribute to conservation projects, habitat management and species protection. They not only provide exceptional photographic opportunities but also help support wildlife that faces increasing pressures in today’s world.

Responsible wildlife photography has always been at the heart of everything I do.

Equipment

I’ve been a Nikon photographer throughout my career and continue to trust Nikon equipment for every assignment.

My current camera system consists of dual Nikon Z9 bodies paired primarily with the outstanding NIKKOR 600mm f/4 and 300mm f/2.8 prime lenses, together with the versatile 180–600mm and 100–400mm zooms.

The reliability, optical performance and consistency of Nikon equipment allow me to concentrate entirely on capturing those fleeting moments that wildlife photography is all about.

Brand Partnerships

I feel incredibly fortunate to work with brands that I genuinely use and trust in the field every day.

Hawke Optics

As a proud Hawke Optics Ambassador, I rely on their binoculars and spotting scopes on every trip. Their optical quality and reliability are exceptional, and I never head into the field without them. If you’re considering new optics, please get in touch—I can often arrange an exclusive discount.

Crib Goch Outdoor

I’m delighted to partner with Crib Goch Outdoor , one of North Wales’ leading independent outdoor retailers with stores in Llanberis and Beddgelert. They stock many of the premium brands I use, including Paramo and Fjällräven.

Cambrian Photography

Cambrian Photography in Colwyn Bay has long been my preferred independent camera retailer. Their knowledge, customer service and support are second to none, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Shimoda Designs

All of my camera equipment travels in Shimoda backpacks. After trying numerous systems over the years, I finally found the perfect solution. Their bags are designed by photographers for photographers and have proven themselves in some of the world’s toughest environments.

Discount Code: GJWP10 for 10% off Shimoda products.

The Muck Boot Company

When you’re spending long days outdoors, comfortable, warm and waterproof footwear is essential. Since discovering Muck Boots, I’ve never looked back. They have become an indispensable part of my kit in every season.
