Buzzard and Little Owl Photography Day

Based at two different Private photography hides in North East Wales, this day gives photographers the opportunity to potentially photograph two very different birds of prey, the Common Buzzard and the Little Owl, and be fully guided and advised by Gary all day.

The day will start with a pre dawn meet up close to the village of Maeshafn, a few miles outside of Mold, this will give time to be in the hide before first light and not be visible to the Buzzards that roost close by in the surrounding woods.

Suitable road kill will be placed out for the Buzzards, who may visit anytime after first light to feed. The hide is situated in beautiful countryside on the edge of a wood, with many woodland species of bird also visiting the hide for the food placed out for them, such as Jays, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Goldcrest and more.

The hide is extremely spacious with plenty of room both for photographers, bags etc. The birds feed close in to the hide, and lenses with a focal length of 300-500mm will be ideal, with a focal length of 500-600mm (full frame) being ideal for the Buzzard shots.

During the winter months the session in the hide will run to mid afternoon, when we then leave the hide to travel down to Rossett ( approx 25 min drive) to the Little Owl hide, where we will set up before darkness falls, the Owls generally come in to feed just after dark.

LED lights will be used to illuminate where the birds feed, with sufficient light to comfortably photograph them, although if you have a flash set up you are welcome to use it on low power. Nikon users will be able to utilise Gary’s flash set up, for an additional £10 charge to cover batteries etc.

The Owls feed approximately 16ft from the hide, the ideal focal length is 300mm full frame, up to 500mm will give a tighter image.

The day will finish by 8.00pm (Winter)

The Day can be single occupancy only with Gary, or if 2 friends or relatives wish to share that is also fine, and the cost will be discounted to £450.
