Pine Marten and Red Squirrel Photography Workshop

Situated in the beautiful countryside of Galloway in Southern Scotland, this is a specialised workshop concentrating on 2 iconic species

Pine Martens are secretive and elusive nocturnal animals, and can be very difficult to get the opportunity to photograph, and Red Squirrels although widespread across Scotland, to get them in a nice photographic environment to unique images is not easy…. on this workshop we will put you in the best place for the best opportunities. With only 2 Photographers on this Workshop, Gary will be able to devote as much time and attention as needed to help you achieve the best images possible.

The Pine Marten hide is located in a Pine Forest, north of Ringford, quiet and isolated it is the perfect location and the Martens are regular visitors to the hide. To photograph them we will be using high speed flash, for Nikon users this can be provided, other system users will need a minimum of 2 off camera flashes, that can be fired from your camera in the hide. Flash stands will be available. Lens focal lengths will need to be 300mm to 500mm. There will be two evening sessions starting before dark to get set up in time, and running for as long as is required. You will have the option to set up static portrait shots, and jumping shots.

The Red Squirrel hide is located in a beautiful mixed woodland that is home to many Red squirrels. The vista in front of the hide will have many feeding positions that will get you very different images, also it can be set up for head on jumping shots. Plus it is home to many woodland birds, including Sparrowhawks that you will have the opportunity to photograph.

Both hides are a short walk from safe parking, it will be muddy underfoot so suitable footwear will be required, as will warm clothing as both the hides are unheated but comfortable. The hides have shelves to position your cameras, a gimbal on plate works well, as does bean bags.

For the full duration of the weekend Gary will be with you to advise, help you achieve the best possible shots, helping with composition, technique and settings etc, as will Alan who owns the hides and is also an exceptional photographer.

No dates are set for this workshop, but can be arranged quickly.

What is included
